Healthcare Business Consulting Group Adds Chiropractic Consultant

ACOM Healthcare Business Consulting Group Adds Chiropractic Consultant with Powerful Coding, Documentation and Business Management Credentials

New consultant's combination of insurance company and clinic professional experience optimal for teaching doctors how to code and document ethically for maximum revenues, fewer challenged claims.

Mt. Vernon, Ohio  -  December 20, 2007 -- Certified Professional Coder Melissa D. Miller has joined the ACOM Healthcare Business Consulting group as a chiropractic consultant, bringing years of experience with coding and documentation accrued both in the clinic and insurer environment.

"Melissa knows the chiropractic coding and documentation discipline intimately from both sides of the equation," said Senior Consultant Bharon Hoag. "She is ideally qualified to help our clients to understand the thinking of third party payers and why they accept, reject or contest claims submissions. And as a Certified Professional Coder with an extensive clinical and training background she can effectively teach doctors how to code and document ethically to maximize their revenues and minimize contested claims. She also has a strong business sense both at the corporate level and the small business environment of the clinic, a talent that she brings to bear in her consulting work."

Immediately prior to joining ACOM, Miller managed daily billing activities for a multi-doctor chiropractic practice, where she handled all patient and insurance collections, cash posting, electronic claim submissions and allied activities. Earlier, she performed in a similar capacity as the team leader in a multi-physician cardiology and cardiovascular practice with clinic offices and hospital locations. Besides her coding and documentation responsibilities, she maintained the system database, trained new employees, audited daily workflow, reviewed and processed denials, handled electronic claim submissions and monthly invoicing, and processed month-end and year-end reports.

Before transitioning to the clinical side, Miller had worked in claims at a major insurance company and as a medical billing analyst for a managed care organization specializing in workers compensation claims.

As the PPOM specialist at Zurich North America, she handled all State of Michigan provider and facility contracts to ensure that the proper discounts obtained as well as processed all Michigan PPO bills and all reconsiderations and adjustments. Among her other responsibilities were new employee training and the development of training documents, and maintaining and revising guidelines. She assisted in the coding review process as-needed basis, identifying proper billing procedures by providers and the proper use of ICD-9 and CPT codes.

As a medical billing analyst at Health Management Solutions, she reviewed and processed all incoming bills for the Bureau of Workers Compensation. She handled all requests by injured workers, attorneys and providers to ensure proper payments and also reviewed case notes to determine if payment was appropriate and observant of proper ICD-9 and CPT coding.

"I am genuinely delighted to be part of the ACOM Consulting Group mission to raise the skill level among physicians concerning proper and ethical coding and documentation," Miller said. "It will be extremely rewarding to help doctors build more successful practices by getting paid fully and fairly for what they do and building winning relationships with the insurance industry."

New Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment Center

LegalView Blog Informs Readers of New Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment Center Being Built to Aid Mesothelioma Cancer Victims

LegalView.com offers readers several mesothelioma resources including its continually updated mesothelioma blog. A recent blog post regarding mesothelioma offered readers an inside into a new mesothelioma treatment center that is to be built in Australia.

Denver, CO  -  December 23, 2007 -- LegalView, the number one source for everything legal on the Internet, recently updated its mesothelioma legal blog to inform readers and sufferers of mesothelioma about a new mesothelioma treatment center that will be built. The new center is scheduled to be open in a year, but, according to news reports, the treatment center's first goal is to ensure that every mesothelioma cancer victim will be able to access treatments available at the center.

Mesothelioma is a deadly and rare form of cancer that is inevitably incurable at the moment. While research continues to lengthen a victim's life as well as to ease the pain the cancer causes, there is still no way to 100 percent treat the cancer. Mesothelioma is usually caused by exposure to asbestos fibers that are breathed into the lung and essentially crystallize causing the development of cancer cells on the lining of the lung. It is typical that mesothelioma occurs anywhere from 10 to 40 years after initial exposure to asbestos. Many are currently being diagnosed with the cancer because of years of negligence by companies who knowingly endangered employees by exposing them to the deadly dust. If you or anyone you know has developed mesothelioma cancer, it may be in your best interest to contact a mesotehlioma law firm for more information.

The new mesothelioma treatment center is being built in honor of a local Sydney man who recently passed away. Bernie Benton was exposed to asbestos and began helping others dealing with the same plight. The mesothelioma treatment center will be one of the world's first asbestos research centers that focuses only on mesothelioma. Those suffering from mesothelioma cancer can find more information on this and other mesothelioma treatments at the mesothelioma information portal.

In addition to information regarding mesothelioma, LegalView.com also offers resources on several additional legal issues that are tragically affecting individuals throughout the country everyday. Readers will be able to find a traumatic brain injury law firm who specializes in helping brain injury victims with consultations and attorney referral services. Individuals who have suffered from a construction accident injury or an auto accident can find information on finding a construction accident attorney or auto accident lawyer through LegalView as well.

Asbestos Lawyers Discuss Steam Pipe Explosion

New York Asbestos Lawyers Discuss Steam Pipe Explosion and Asbestos Testing

The steam pipe explosion near Grand Central Terminal, in New York City, caused at least one death and many serious injuries

New York  - July 20, 2007 -- Earlier this week, a steam pipe explosion near Grand Central Terminal, in New York City, caused at least one death and many serious injuries. The explosion also raised concerns about whether or not asbestos was released into the air when the steam pipe exploded.

New York asbestos
lawyer Robert I. Komitor of Levy Phillips & Konigsberg, LLP ("LPK") observed that, "Historically, most steam pipes were insulated with asbestos. Although asbestos insulation has been replaced with non-asbestos substitutes in some of the steam pipes, in New York City, many other pipes continue to be covered in asbestos."

Shortly after the explosion, New York City officials announced that asbestos testing would be conducted to determine if the air surrounding the steam pipe explosion had become contaminated with asbestos.

The New York Times reported that Michael S. Clendenin, a spokesman for Con Edison, which maintains the pipes beneath the city said, "We always assume there's asbestos in a steam pipeĀ… so we are treating these materials sent up by the rupture, including piping, as if asbestos were in them."

Asbestos testing is conducted by pulling a calibrated volume of air through
filtering equipment. The sample obtained by the filter is then examined under a microscope for the presence of asbestos. The Environmental Protection Agency publishes procedures for how to determine if asbestos has compromised air quality.

Jerome H. Block, another New York asbestos lawyer with LPK, stated, "The key issue is finding out if the steam pipe that burst was covered in asbestos. If it was, then the airborne dust and debris from that pipe would have contained asbestos."

A material such as pipe covering can be tested for asbestos through a "bulk sampling", which involves taking a small piece of the material and analyzing it under a polarized light microscope.

Asbestos testing is typically performed by scientists trained in industrial hygiene or
material sciences.

Worried about the possibility of asbestos exposure, New York City health experts advised that people in the vicinity of the explosion discard their clothes and bathe carefully.

Asbestos is a known human carcinogen; exposure to it is known to cause
mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Scientists have not identified any safe level of asbestos exposure. Most cases of asbestos cancer are caused by exposure to asbestos products. Asbestos has been used not only in steam pipe covering, but also in many other industrial and home products, including gaskets, packing, cable, joint compounds, brake linings, clutch facings and equipment, such as boilers and pumps.

For more information about asbestos exposure and
asbestos-related diseases, visit www.lpklaw.com/mesothelioma-asbestos . Messrs. Komitor and Block were recently featured in New York Magazine as two of "New York Area's Best Lawyers" in recognition of their work as asbestos lawyers in the New York metropolitan area.

Senior Long Term Health Care Choices

Health Care Professional Publishes Book for Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers are expected to impact the US health care system for decades to come. A newly released report indicates the over-65 population will nearly triple by 2030, as 78 million boomers become senior citizens.

Fort Bragg, CA (PRWEB) July 10, 2007 -- "Boomers are just the beginning," notes Rich Umbdenstock, president of the American Hospital Association. "[They will change health care dramatically; [their mark will be lasting." The good news is that "boomers are focused on wellness and looking for new approaches to care." The bad news is that 6 out of 10 boomers will be dealing with more than 1 chronic condition by 2030.

According to health care professional Janet O'Connor, "Anyone over the age of 65 now has a 40% chance of entering a nursing home. More than 9 million people over the age of 65 will need long-term care this year. By the year 2020, it will be 12 million."

Ms. O'Connor has published a 207-page book for boomers -- Senior Long Term Care Choices: How To Select The Best Plan For Your Whole Family. It catalogues the full spectrum of available care, looks closely at resources, and provides essential information for making informed choices about long-term care.

What makes Ms. O'Connor's approach interesting is that she's integrated web technology, allowing her to deliver constantly updated, leading-edge advice to her readers.

"The challenge," O'Connor explains, "was to provide up-to-the-minute information that could be immediately accessed and easily updated. Publishing online allowed me to take advantage of internet technology. It's important to have easy access to the latest information and guidance when you're trying to set up effective long-term care."

According to Umbdenstock, boomers will be more active and focused on staying in their homes than previous generations. Senior Long Term Care Choices, provides detailed information that helps seniors maintain their homes. The book offers step-by-step advice on how to manage independent living, reliable home caregivers and find the financial support necessary to sustain independence.

Senior health care is a moving target. The changing demands of boomers along with new technology, will likely translate into new forms of care delivery. O'Connor's methodology is designed to keep pace with these changes. Senior Long Term Care Choices is downloadable and resource links are embedded in the text. As resources and information change, readers will receive free updates filled with new links and timely news.

O'Connor has 2 sites online: http://www.squidoo.com/care4elderly/ provides a host of resources, and http://www.help4longtermcare.com offers many additional articles.

"Ideally," says O'Connor, "the sooner you begin a dialogue about long-term care with your loved one and the rest of the family, the better. By broaching the subject in advance, you can make decisions as a family before you are forced by circumstances to decide in haste."

Diseases Caused By Asbestos

Asbestos: Lessons in Shame

How can a tiny mineral kill tens of thousands of people and cost industry billions of dollars? It's actually pretty simple when the mineral is a carcinogen called asbestos and companies tried to hide its dangers. Diseases caused by asbestos include: mesothelioma (http://www.survivingmesothelioma.com), lung cancer, and asbestosis.

(PRWEB) December 13, 2007 -- The Surviving Mesothelioma website http://www.survivingmesothelioma.com has listed some of the most outrageous examples of companies hiding the truth about deadly asbestos from the public and their own employees. The result of this shameful behavior is that thousands of healthy people of all ages have become stricken with debilitating and deadly diseases like mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.

For example in the early 1940's, the president of a major asbestos manufacturing company said that the managers of another company were "a bunch of fools for notifying employees who had asbestosis." When one of the people in attendance asked, "Do you mean to tell me you would let them work until they drop dead?" According to deposition testimony, the response was, "Yes. We save a lot of money that way."

One of the people that may have saved these companies money was Paul Kraus. When Paul was a young man he worked downwind from a factory that cut asbestos sheets. Paul remembers the blue dust wafting in the air and settling all around him - on his clothes, hands and arms, and on his work area. Thirty years later he would be diagnosed with mesothelioma - the "asbestos caused cancer." His prognosis was six months to live. Unlike many others, Paul was quite fortunate. He followed his own path to healing and continues to live a healthy, quality life, ten years after he was first diagnosed. He described his experiences in his acclaimed book: Surviving Mesothelioma and Other Cancers: A Patient's Guide.

New Occupational Asbestos Exposure Information

LegalView to Update Mesothelioma Site with Occupational Asbestos Exposure Information

Recognizing that thousands of American workers may have had occupational exposure to asbestos during the 20th century, LegalView adds occupational mesothelioma information.

Denver, CO  - October 10, 2007 -- LegalView.com, your complete online resource for everything legal on the web, is proud to inform readers that they can now find even more complete, accurate information on the circumstances surrounding the deadly cancer mesothelioma through its mesothelioma law information portal.

Mesothelioma is a very serious type of lung cancer that is almost always caused by preventable occupational exposure to asbestos, a building material that was extremely common in shipyards, construction and other heavy industry in the decades following World War II. Hundreds of thousands of American workers and service members were exposed to asbestos in the course of their jobs.

Because
mesothelioma symptoms can remain dormant for decades after exposure, mesothelioma continues to appear in retired workers even today. As a service to victims of mesothelioma and anyone who may have been exposed to asbestos, LegalView.com is proud to announce the development of an ever growing resource devoted to exploring occupations at risk from asbestos, with many articles detailing how employees in certain occupations might have a higher risk of becoming a mesothelioma victim.

Since the early 20th century it has been commonly known among the scientific and medical communities that
asbestos causes mesothelioma and other serious health problems. According to several U.S. government reports, documents exposed in the 1970s illustrated that the asbestos industry and the federal government knew for decades that asbestos was dangerous, but covered it up, fearing a legal backlash As a result, workers in industries that used asbestos heavily continued to be exposed, in some cases as late as 1990, with some workers still possibly being exposed today. Decades later, these workers are at a drastically increased risk of being diagnosed with mesothelioma. And unfortunately, mesothelioma is almost always deadly; victims have a median survival rate of six months to a year after diagnosis.

Visitors who would like to learn more about the legal
issues surrounding mesothelioma, asbestos exposure and related health concerns are invited to visit LegalView.com's new mesothelioma legal help portal at mesothelioma.legalview.com.

Recognizing that mesothelioma will be a
public health problem for decades, LegalView has established a collection of original articles on the disease; a glossary of terms; up-to-date news articles; FDA alerts; and jury verdicts and settlements. In addition to new features, such as detailed information about mesothelioma symptoms, causes, companies that used asbestos, as well as treatment resources. Also, visitors to the mesothelioma portal can utilize the free mesothelioma lawyer referral service to find a mesothelioma attorney in their state.

The mesothelioma portal is just part of LegalView's collection of free, comprehensive
information on the legal issues important to Americans. Visitors with broader legal concerns can use LegalView.com's many information portals to help them find a construction accident attorney, a brain injury lawyer, or a auto accident.

Along with the attorney referral services for these different issues, readers can find original, factual and clearly written information; the
latest news and research, including blogs dedicated to a specific legal issue; government information and releases; and guides to relevant legal and medical terms.

Americans Mostly Support Pharmacy Technician Certification

Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Survey Shows Broad Support Among Americans For Pharmacy Technician Certification

According to Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) survey, 73% of Americans Believe Law Requires Certification for Pharmacy Techs and 91% Support Standards in Every State.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) December 5, 2007 -- A survey released today by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) shows that Americans have strong misperceptions about the required qualifications of the people helping pharmacists prepare prescriptions in pharmacies. The poll results, released today at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists' (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting, show that the vast majority of Americans believe that all pharmacy technicians are required to be trained and certified, when in reality, these regulations vary from state to state.

"This data shows without a doubt that American consumers -- in fact, 91% of those surveyed -- support strong regulations across the country to protect patient safety by requiring that pharmacy technicians be trained and certified," said Melissa Murer Corrigan, RPh, Executive Director and CEO of PTCB. "Consumers recognize how important it is to have a standard that they can rely on at their pharmacy, in hospitals, and everywhere that medication is dispensed."

The survey, which was administered by Opinion Research Corporation on behalf of PTCB, showed that consumers have high expectations for qualifications of the people who help pharmacists prepare prescriptions. In fact, 45% of those surveyed incorrectly thought that people without formal training were not allowed to help pharmacists prepare prescriptions, and a majority, 58% thought that only licensed pharmacists are involved in dispensing drug prescriptions.

Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in dispensing medications. The pharmacy technician is accountable to the supervising pharmacist who is legally responsible through state licensure for the care and safety of patients served by the pharmacy.

"This study shows that consumers expect their state lawmakers to protect them by passing and enforcing strong regulations that require a standard of competence for pharmacy technicians," said Gay Dodson, R.Ph., Executive Director, Texas State Board of Pharmacy. "In Texas, the Legislature and State Board of Pharmacy were the first to require certification of pharmacy technicians as a pre-requisite to registration. This is an important first step for consumer protection and patient safety."

In fact, most respondents in the poll assumed that requirements are already in place across the country. Only 13% of respondents correctly recognized that there are no nationwide requirements for the training and certification of pharmacy technicians.

"It is time to live up to what consumers expect," said Douglas J. Scheckelhoff, R.Ph., M.S., FASHP, Vice President, Professional Development, ASHP. "We know patients deserve a high standard of safety when it comes to how their prescription medications are dispensed." "Now we know it is what they expect, as well."

About the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
PTCB was established in January 1995 and is governed by five pharmacy organizations - the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP), the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). Since PTCB's inception, PTCB has certified over 288,000 pharmacy technicians through the examination and transfer process PTCB's certification program is the only pharmacy technician certification program accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The goal of the PTCB national certification program is to enable pharmacy technicians to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer safe and effective patient care and service.
